Frequently Asked Questions
  • How far do we run during practice?
Depending on individual fitness level and ability, we run between 2-4 miles across a wide variety of terrains including asphalt, trails, and grass.  We will do a variety of training runs including longer distances, intervals, and hill repeats.  Above all, we run as a group and have a lot of fun!
  • How many practices do I need to attend before competing in a meet?
Per WIAA rules, all student athletes must attend 10 practices.  Athletes must attend the practice prior to a meet to participate. Athletes must attend school the day of the meet to participate.
  • How long are races?
Regardless of the course, every race is 3,000 meters (1.89 miles).
  • What should I wear?
Athletes should wear comfortable running shoes, shorts, and a (moisture-wicking) t-shirt.  As we run in all conditions, a long-sleeved shirt is also recommended.  Islander dress code applies at all times.
  • What about shoes?
Athletes should wear a well-fitting pair of running shoes that provide adequate support and reduce road impact.  Super Jock-n-Jill and Road Runner Sports, both located near Greenlake in Seattle, specialize in fitting athletes with the proper shoe.  Other athletic stores offer similar services.
  • What is the practice schedule?
Practice will be on Tuesday-Friday from 3-4:10. Monday practices after school (early release 1:30-2:40) are optional, as are Fridays since there is no activity bus.
  • What about after-practice transportation?
Athletes can ride the Activity Bus that departs from the front of the school at 4:20, Tues, Wed, and Thurs. There is no bus Monday or Fridays. Parents may also pick up their son or daughter at the back of the school.
  • I'm a parent and would like to get involved.  How can I help?
There are a few different ways that you can get involved!
  • Come run with us during practice!  Email Doug Davis if you're interested!  We'd love to have you and our athletes really benefit from the additional individual attention and encouragement.
  • Volunteer at home meets as a course marshal, a timer, or finish line volunteer.  This is a great way to watch races; no experience is necessary.  Interested? Email Rhonda Glass.
  • Bring easy-to-eat, healthy, post-race snacks and water to home and away meets for our hungry athletes.  Orange slices, apple slices, and nut-free granola bars are favorites.  Interested? Email Rhonda Glass.
